Friday

Five minute meal:
Butter poached Petrale Sole with lemon and capers.

Also, a crazy thought... but is blogging dead?
I can't help but notice people posting less (including myself), comments dwindling, and I hate to admit it but– a new obsession called Instagram!
I was a little late to hop on this band wagon (as in my mom installed it on my phone) and my phone is old and takes the worst pictures,
BUT it's really kind of fun and easy. And quick!
Thoughts?

Here's my two cents: the text part of blogging "frames" photos and makes them more interesting.
But my blogging interaction is specific in that I live abroad, in a non-English speaking country, and I actually look for blogs that remind me of the narrative of my life from before (most of old my friends don't blog/etc at all - they mostly write for print).
Continuing to love your blog and beautiful posts ~~ have a great weekend!

I've been wondering the same thing! I'll be curious to read what other people have to say. There's something nice about being able to go more in depth in a blog post, and to read those longer narratives. But I have to say I'm also totally obsessed with instagram and find myself using it much more. It is really fast and easy! I hope blogs don't totally go away though.

I have noticed that too! I think it's great that bloggers are posting less -- it's important to LIVE life, not just write about it -- but I'll be sad if people are actually trading blogging for instagram. It is super easy (and addictive!) and I love gorgeous images as much as the next girl... but you can't really tell a story, or convey what you're thinking, in a short-form visual platform like instagram.

And part of what I love so much about YOUR blog is your little sentence snippets and thoughts and ideas...!! (and, admittedly, the gorgeous images too). xo

i totally agree. since instagram, i have almost stopped blogging. now, i find that i blog when i want to share inspirations or announce something with my business. it's less about my experiences. and with pinterest, it's even less about sharing inspirations... however, i still feel like the blog is the umbrella for all of those different outlets - kinda keeps it in one place.

on another note - can you recommend a good rosé (or two)? i had a yummy bottle last night (charles & charles), but no clue what else to try. i've tried rosés before but usually find them too sweet.

Instagram: boo!
Blogging: woo!

Don't give in completely, you're better than that!

i am still in retro blog mode. i don't even know how to use instagram.
i think the blog world probably gets smaller. small is good though.

I've definitely noticed the shift. It seems that people are tending toward applications or platforms with minimal text (like Instagram or Twitter) rather than commenting or posting on blogs as regularly as they once did. And while I do think people are still reading blogs, perhaps they are just engaging less?

I really miss is the depth of community I've experienced on blogs (and on Flickr!), but I'll continue to blog because I shoot film and appreciate the spaciousness a post helps build around a particular moment in time.

I am totally selfish about blogging and I really find I am so much less inclined to post when it's beautiful outside! I also think it's fine if its something not everyone does anymore, it might make/keep it more interesting...

i agree. i think there are so many different ways to have an online 'presence' that it gets hard to keep up as the one producing OR reading the work.

hope you're well, ashley!

i notice less comments, less visits - but personally, my blog is so different from what i share on instagram - they have separate functions and so i wouldn't stop with either. but i do notice a shift in the audience and their level of participation/enthusiasm. sometimes i still think i'm blogging for myself though -- and i am -- so i'm cool with that.

(ps - what is your instagram username?)

summertime = outside more, posting less

instagram is quick and dirty so you have more time to spend in the lake. the blogging will come back in the fall.

yeah i agree with you brian... i post things on insta that i wouldn't necessarily post on my blog. i just realized i get behind so much now on my blog, posting things for last weekend etc., things that have already been on my insta... lol.

my user name is ashleyhelvey!!!

i think the blog format is outmoded as a user. they need to make it super easy to post from your mobile like instagram does. text/narrative is to me what makes a blog different from instagram and from tumblrs, and therefore remains distinct, but the technology needs to catch up. i find reformatting the photos, etc, a big pain.

yeah totally emma... blogger makes it so hard to even customize image size it makes me want to tear my hair out! i still think i am resizing them wrong :/

As a lurker and occasional blogger I really admire people who find the time and inspiration to blog as often and as beautifully as you. What I really wanted to say though, was that after having recently been sucked in to the whole pinterest thing & instagram for a time, blogging and bloggers are where it's at for me. I think others have already said it, but for me it's about words as much as anything. Stories about other people's lives that are often very simple but nevertheless insightful and inspiring. With pinterest and instagram I found myself saturated with images. Not necessarily in a good way. I think it's important to stand up for the written word. And I think I should probably comment more on the blogs I love!

it truly is so much easier to keep up with instagram than blogging. it's like mobile blogging, one image/ thought at a time. I am trying to remind myself to update my blog with film photos though, it's the hardest to find the desire to do so in the summer time..

Thanks for bringing this up! Yes, I have also caught myself getting too wrapped up in Instgram (@canoe_toolandtack) b/c it is so easy and fun. I think folks enjoy it more than blogs right now b/c it feels less intimidating to comment on someone's photo than on their blog post. Like twitter, folks you admire seem a bit closer to reach out to and have a conversation (although it's a short conversation).

I've recently shifted to blogging 2x a week at toolandtack.com and I find that a lot easier to deal with than my previous blogging schedule. I enjoy spending more time on the posts, incorporating video and sound clips to go along with the text. It's been several months like that and blogging life feels a bit lighter/less pressure and I am enjoying it more.

Please don't stop blogging! Just a minimal line and a handful of your dreamy photos is so inspiring and I feel enriched whenever I stop by this blog, Ashley.

I LOVE reading and looking at blogs!
And i adore your lovely pictures and reading wee snippets of things. I do not have instagram nor will i be jumping on that bandwagon mainly because of my lack of interest in fancy phones and such. I so hope that blogging is not going away any time soon!

I agree, please don't stop posting here. Your blog is such a wealth of good stuff. In other news, I am excited that you use Instagram!

i've been wondering that too. my blog has been dead a while....
i can totally sit and consume just images on the internet and its not less content-ful....or necessarily less of a narrative. but somehow it does feel a little empty after a while. and i want to know something about the images, the author....or i like to know if someone is posting their own image or someone elses. is it a picture of a random vase or a vase you made..... some context i guess. but i generally am behind the times. i still prefer email to fb messages.
