Finally! Here are the necklaces my mom and I collaborated on! My mom is a jewelry designer, so we decided to make a special collection of necklaces together. I found these rocks (remember?) at AGATE BEACH in BOLINAS, CALIFORNIA (a very unusual hidden beach with the most incredible treasures) and she hand cast them from bronze. They all come with an interchangeable black and brown deer skin cord that you can size yourself. AT TOTOKAELO! Hope you like! P.s.- there is no rock inside, it it pure bronze:)

Warm tuna salad! So easy, just pan fry some green beans and super thinly sliced potatoes with a little garlic and chili pepper, then at the last minute toss in a can of tuna- presto! I am really excited- we finally got a studio! It's very tiny, but cute. I will post pictures soon. We are getting a table made today and should have it by the weekend :)

Coffee from my new Chemex! It took me a while to learn how to use, but it does seem to make the coffee taste better (the filters are thicker and remove oil and impurities). Walk with Taylor at Carkeek.

I used to work as an atelierista for a Reggio Emilia inspired preschool and this is a project we did exploring color. The dialogue this project invoked was incredible, "Look, I am using my hair as a paintbrush!" and "Something is happening, it's green!" I miss working with children, they are such an inspiration!

How devastating is the tragedy in Haiti.... ugh it makes my stomach turn. I pray that all the families of the women Verrettes are safe. In 2007 I worked with the co-op Famn Veret to develop a line of computer and i-phone cases from felt with Dutch journalist Ton Vriens. They have since produced beautiful products from the organic, plant-dyed wool I use. Please read more here and support them by purchasing one. You can also help by purchasing anything at Heath Ceramics, 25% will be donated to Architecture for Humanity's earthquake reconstruction efforts in Haiti.

Since the New Year we have decided to be a little bit more active in seeing/doing all the touristy Seattle things. We read an article about how people living in a city rarely see/do as much as tourists that visit the city for just a few days, which I found to be true for me since I have yet to walk over the Golden Gate Bridge! We started with brunch at Boat Street Cafe!

Photobucket
Then walked up to Queene Anne for an incredible view at Kerry Park. We were going to go on the Space Needle but it was like $17.50 or something ridiculous, so we walked up the hill to see this view of the city, which I though was way nicer anyway!

Hip hip hurray! I finally figured out how to make bigger photos! Sure took me long enough... Aren't these toothbrushes cool? I am a toothbrush collector (well can I call myself that if I use them?) and I went crazy when I found these at Tortoise while I was back at home over the holidays. The pink one has boar hair bristles!

So, here it goes, I followed this tutorial, but found that flickr made the photos too big/too small (I wanted them to be in between) so I used photobucket. I was really resisting having to upload images to another site just to make them bigger, but it turns out it takes just as long to "upload" them through blogger. It's crazy blogger doesn't make an even larger size available... hello!

Since that tutorial doesn't tell you what size to select on photobucket, I had to troubleshoot and figured out the following: create an account, upload the photo, click on it, then "resize" it to "Large (640x4800)", then scroll a bit down the page and copy the "HTML code" and paste it into your "New Post" box and publish. Whew... hope that makes sense! Good luck!

Friday

One of my New Year's resolutions is to practice roasting a chicken to perfection. I usually don't take the time to follow directions and they don't turn out quite as good as they could. I've looked at many recipes and the one that I did last night was simple and fast. Here is my rendition from Gourmet Mag:

-Preheat oven to 475º
-clean chicken
-make rub with unsalted butter and minced garlic
-rub butter mixture under skin and use remaining to rub inside chicken cavity
-stuff cavity with lemons if you some, truss
-salt pepper
-put in a cast iron skillet
-cook for 20 mins or so or until golden brown
-turn temp down to 350º until cooked

We ate it with roasted curly cabbage and squeezed lemon, I thought it turned out delicious, but I am excited to try out some other recipes to get it down pat! Next I will brine it I think.

Oh! and check out that cute water craft I got at Gravel and Gold!

Any good chicken roasting recommendations?
Blue Bottle chocolate chip cookie- love the serving paper (coffee filter)

While I was back in San francisco I finally got a chance to visit Gravel and Gold. Love the geode planters and wooden crystals.

Wednesday

Some shots from IKO IKO! So happy I got a chance to go visit, the shop looks so great. If you're in L.A. you must go visit, Kristin just got back from Arizona and brought back some mighty fine treasures. Also, I found that Japanese masking tape I posted on Hunter Gatherer for her at Tortoise.
