VERRETTES, HAITI
Where to begin? My visit to Haiti was such a wonderful experience. Ton, the Dutch filmmaker/journalist who invited me has formed a group of women in Verrettes that will hopfeully someday soon become a cooperative. His goal is to revitalize the native Haitian cotton by asking farmers to plant seeds without using any pesticides and have the women spin skeins and knit organic baby blankets from it. As this process will take some time, he is temporarily having artists go down to teach different crafts like embroidery, knitting, and felting to give the group work.
